(CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – March 24, 2022) In recognition of Deputy Chief John P. Brown’s distinguished law enforcement career and dedication to public service, the Piankeshaw Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution is proud to present our 2022 Law Enforcement Commendation to Deputy Chief John P. Brown. The award and citation were presented to Deputy Chief Brown on March 23, 2022, at the organization’s monthly meeting.
John Brown is currently Deputy Chief of Police for the Village of Tolono Police Department, serving since his appointment in 2020. Deputy Chief Brown previously served as Lieutenant for the University of Illinois Police Department from 2015 to 2020. Deputy Chief Brown began his career as a patrol officer in 1990 with the University of Illinois. From 2000 to 2003 he served as Corporal, then Sergeant 2003 to 2015.
Deputy Chief Brown holds a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice with a specialization in Law Enforcement and secondary concentration in Corrections Management from Southern Illinois University. He received a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education in 2018 from the University of Virginia. He is a 2018 graduate of the FBI National Academy and a 2017 graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.
Deputy Chief Brown currently serves as President of the Village of Savoy where he was elected in 2021. Previously, he served as Village Trustee from 2005 until 2021. Brown has also been serving as Public Administrator and Public Guardian for Champaign Country since 2011, a gubernatorial appointed Officer of the Court.
Deputy Chief Brown is involved in several community organization including Rotary International, CRIS Health Aging Advisory Board, Illinois Guardianship Association Board Member, Knights of Columbus, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, former board member of Catholic Charities, former Volunteer Firefighter and Fire Investigator, former Assistant Scout Leader, Fraternal Order of Police, and a member of Saint Matthew Catholic Church.
Deputy Chief Brown has received many honors and recognitions throughout his career and served on several law enforcement boards and teams including ILEAS Region VII Mobile Field Force Commander and METRO SWAT Team Commander.
The Sons of the American Revolution is a historical, educational, and patriotic organization which seeks to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, an appreciation for true patriotism, a respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship, and the unifying force of e pluribus unum that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people. Today the SAR consists of 26,000 members in over 500 chapters in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Almost 165,000 descendants of the men and women Patriots of the American Revolution have been admitted since our founding. SAR members include fifteen presidents of the United States.
